Sports vs. Events/Games

OK...my last post had me thinking for a minute, and I have had this argument a few times with people back in the day. Certain things on ESPN, NBC Sports, etc...that I do NOT consider sports. I have a few rules on what makes a sport, but these are fairly opinionated. One, to be a sport you must have a scoreboard. Second, some sort of object like a ball must be used. So. Other then the basic 3, baseball, football, basketball, are these considered sports, games, or events?

Soccer- Sport - Even though this is controlled by European and Third World countries, and you can't use your hands, not to mention I hate it, this is a sport. Its the most common game in the world, and it takes a ton of stamina, skill and endurance to play.
Golf - Sport - I know, you can rip heaters, lip darts, drink 400 beers and ride a cart. But, this too requires great hand eye coordination, not to mention patience, intelligence and technical skill. I have to go with sport on this one.
Auto racing - Event - Yes this too requires hand eye coordination and mental toughness, but jesus, anyone can do this...just go go go and turn left 2000 times.
Swimming - Event - Actually, I liken this more to survival...if you don't paddle, or float in the winter, chances are, youll drown. I dont see the highlights of the 50 meter individual medley getting top billing on ESPN, unless its the Olympics. And even the Olympics call their events, EVENTS.
Poker - Game. Blind people can play cards. This doesn't make them athletes. This should only be shown on its own network (see below.)
Track and Field - Event- same as swimming, only is big during the Olympics. Running and jumping is not sports, they are athletic events. No ball, no scoreboard, its who jumpest highest and who runs fastest.
Figure skating - Event - same with gymnastics, I don't believe anything that has a "judge" with a subjective view in charge of who wins constitutes sport. I guess under the same token, I would have to lump boxing in this, although it seems a bit hypocritical to do so. Not always does the best person or team win.
Tennis - Sport - I have to lump this in with Soccer. Great athletic ability, scoreboard, ball, you name it. Besides the judges this has everything a sport needs. At this point, a judge isnt needed, we have the screaming loud siren that goes off when a serve misses, why not include that all over the court??
Hockey - Sport - There is an object (puck), and a scoreboard. Plus this has almost as much contact as football, and you can get seriously hurt playing. This takes skill with hands and feet. I say its a sport.

Anyhow, im sure this could see some debate. Im interested in some reactions here.

My million dollar idea - PTV - Poker Television

Since we have the WSOP on ESPN 3 nights a week, we have the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel a couple times a week, high stakes poker on GSN, why don't we just get our shit together and create the Poker Network or Poker TV. The NFL network pulls off 24 hours of football coverage, even during the offseason. Why can't we create a network for poker? I mean let's be real here, poker isn't even a sport (ooh, another rant to blog about later!) Here is an example of how PTV can work

12 am to 6 am - Reruns of former WSOP satellites and main events.
7 am - 10 am - One hour of poker news(SportsCenter style- duh duh duh, duh duh duh)where broadcasters can discuss which big names are in what tournament, up and coming players, etc..
10 am - 2 pm - Player biographies - sort of the "behind the music" if you will about various poker players, their struggles, their success stories.
2 pm - 6 pm - Educational shows - how to play 7 card stud, Omaha Hi, stratgeies on Hold em, etc..
6 pm - 7 pm - Daily news again
7 pm - 12 am - Live coverage of current tournaments or big cash games. Live interviews

Come on now, how hard is it? Only need a few broadcasters for this, and I can bet dollars to donuts the average degenerate will fork over 7 bucks extra a month to Comcast or Dish Network if they think it will help them in the long run win more money. Good idea?????

Uh oh - the Rocket saw something he doesn't like

Now I understand this is a political slam created by the Douglas administration, but this still strikes home a bit, as countless colleagues of mine have lost jobs due to prior administrations' failure to secure long term growth at IBM BTV. Ill let the viewer(s) here decide for themselves what they think...

You cant spell Gentleman without G!!

Oh hellllll no!! the apocalypse is here finally! This is TV's version of Hurricane Katrina, the Tsunami, 9/11, Pearl Harbor, Bucky Dent's homer in 1978 all in one. I watched the premiere of this for about 7 minutes last night. Thank God, or Allah, that the All Star game was on, otherwise my dumb ass would be roped into this. 15 douchebag Guido's and pimp wannabe's go to a house and basically learn to be gentlemen. This is the male version of Charm school. Could someone do me a favor and watch this, and let me know how it is....I dont want to get sucked in!

I LOVE JD DREW

2008 MLB All Star MVP???? Is this even possible to believe? Last year this fool almost got booed out of Boston, suffering thru a .270, 11, 64 season, only to resurrect himself in the playoffs. His game 5 grand slam catapulted the Red Sox to the ALCS championship. This year, he is undoubtedly the Red Sox team MVP. With Big Papi on the DL, along with a pile of other injuries, the sometimes fragile Nancy has put up the numbers that the brass in Beantown thought he was capable of when they signed him to the 70 million dollar deal. Last night, his 2 run tater helped assure the Red Sox would get home field advantage in this year's World Series. And for that I say...I LOVE JD DREW!!

Friday Rock OUT

Friday Poker Recap

Well, once again my domination was witnessed as I took complete control of the first game for my tenth 1st place finish. This put me briefly 2 cashes ahead of Dan Brooks for the group. The key hand in the first game, was a heads up race between Howard and I. His Qh Qk, versus my Ac Kc..Flop was 5h 8d 7c..turn is a 10c and the river is a 5c..so in theory I sucked out a river flush, but this was a classic race. From there I proceeded to mow down the rest of the competition and win the game.
Second game, I got out to a huge chip lead, with AA taking 3/4 of Jan's chips versus his QQ. However, when we got to 3 remaining players my stack was dwindling, so I made a move with A3 when I saw a KQ3 flop, only to see Dan call immediately with 33...game over. Here are the current standings of our Thursday poker league

Cashes 1st 2nd
Rick F 19 10 9
Dan B 18 12 6
Glenn 12 9 3
Jan 13 2 11
Mary B 11 8 3
Howard 8 4 4
Don P 5 1 4
Sue 5 1 4
Linda 5 1 4
Bob W 4 3 1
Diane 3 3 0
Jim G 3 2 1
Paul 2 0 2
Lacey 2 0 2
Jim B 2 0 2
Janet 1 1 0
Danny 1 1 0
Rick R 1 0 1

Thursday - Poker Night, degenerates convene!

The return of the Brooks' make this a highly anticipated poker night. I am now in the lead over Danny with 18 total cashes. Since this is also the week of the 2008 WSOP Main event, the intensity of tonight's game will be electric. Details tomorrow!!

Hi...Im Scuba and I like....

to make sure my poppa wakes up at 1:14 am, 4:07 am, and of course at 6:22 am. I really don't think he needs as much as sleep as I get. I like to lick his head and lay on his back when he's sleeping great. I get a kick out of waking him up and nagging him to death!

Reporter eats a bug, can't see POLLEN

Do all reporters use separate voices at home? Or is this an actor? This just makes one wonder whether reporters with distinguishable voices and attitudes are doing this as a stage routine, or if they act the same way at home. I get the feeling Tom Messner goes home and still gives shitty news to his family with a stupid grin on his face, but anyway, this is a great clip.

Monday Rap Out...

Caddyshack relived!!!

OK folks, after viewing the above clip, you will clearly understand where I am going with this update. 2 weeks ago during IBM league, golfing at Cedar Knoll on the south course, Steve and I were waiting near the green for one of the other players to chip on. Of course this player takes 89 practice swings, and loses our attention (not that I have any to begin with.) Now here is where it gets funny. Steve, who was focused on this guy preparing to hit, turns his head just as he hits. All of a sudden the ball goes right at Steve and hits him. Steve goes down like a deer that just got shot. Hilarity ensues. Steve is laughing sort of, rolling around a bit. Im out of my mind roaring, thinking the ball just hit him in the leg. Keep in mind this was 15 yrds away with a wedge, so pain shouldn't be a factor here. So, as I start to wipe the tears from my eyes, I calmly ask him, "where that hit you"? And the response I got was nothing short of magical.

"Right in the head of the cock"!

Sorry Steve and Anna for not posting this sooner, I didn't know my blog was so important to every one. :-)

Ive been lazy at updating the blog!!

Back to work Monday!!! Well I was told this weekend by a couple different sources that yes this piss poor blog I do does in fact get read. So yes folks I will update this more regularly. I apologize to my loyal readers. First off is a great story that I have been asked to post my first hand account on, which I will post separately.
